Hugh Freeze didn’t want to do anything too fancy during Ole Miss’ spring football game on Saturday.
The so-called “Grove Bowl” wasn’t supposed to be the coming out party for new offensive coordinator Phil Longo. Neither was it the stage for Shea Patterson, the Rebs’ electrifying young quarterback taking over for Chad Kelly, to put on a show. He was to wear his no-contact jersey dutifully and be utterly vanilla. With the scrimmage broadcast on TV, fans (and eager opponents) would get only the skeleton offense: a simple set of 12-14 plays, according to Longo.
