BATON ROUGE, La. -- Let's be clear about this point up front: The race to become LSU's starting quarterback will truly begin a year from now. Until that springtime 2018 competition between a host of inexperienced youngsters, everyone is battling to become Danny Etling's backup.
A segment of LSU's fan base asserts that someone else might wrestle the job away from incumbent starter Etling -- even after 2015 starter Brandon Harris announced last week that he plans to transfer this summer. They believe a dual-threat player like former local prep hero Lindsey Scott or third-year sophomore Justin McMillan might better fit new offensive coordinator Matt Canada's scheme, one that has frequently utilized running quarterbacks.
