The start of the SEC football season is still a few weeks away, but it's clear which teams can count on big things from their quarterbacks. While the SEC is still the king of college football, it's not because of their quarterbacks. As shown with the Top 5 SEC QBs for 2016, there's a lack of quality, proven talent at the position this year.
You can cross off schools like Alabama, Florida and Auburn because of the complete uncertainty at their QB spots. While the top two spots are very clear, the rest of the grouping is a mess. Many teams are on the verge of starting QBs with little to no experience. With that in mind, here are the 5 Best QBs in the SEC for 2016.
5. Jacob Eason, Georgia
This how bad the QB situation is in the SEC is. While players like Arkansas' Austin Allen or Kentucky's Drew Barker could have a claim to this spot and a QB that emerges from a competition could end up here, we're going with Eason. The five-star QB was one of the highest rated recruits in the country last year and has the inside track to the starting job. While he he's just a true freshman, he enrolled early and played well enough in the spring game. Brice Ramsey and Greyson Lambert will fight for the starting job, but Eason could be this year's Josh Rosen.
4. Trevor Knight, Texas A&M
Which Trevor Knight shows up? The one who dominated Alabama a few years or ago, or the one who struggled for much of his time with the Oklahoma Sooners? The Aggies are banking on it being the former, especially since Kyler Murray and Kyle Allen are both gone. Texas A&M has some solid pieces and if Knight can avoid turnovers, he could put up some solid numbers.
3. Brandon Harris, LSU
Actually, perhaps Harris at No. 3 is a better representation of how bad the QB situation is for the SEC than Eason at No. 5. Harris failed to complete even 54 percent of his passes last year, and his struggles helped prevent LSU from capturing an SEC West crown. However, he's a dual threat and showed some ability to throw the deep ball. Another year of development should benefit Harris and LSU. And frankly, who else can you put above Harris?
2. Joshua Dobbs, Tennessee
Finally, some proven and high-quality QBs. Dobbs is the clear cut No. 2 in the SEC. The Vols QB is a true dual threat, leading SEC QBS with 671 yards on the ground. He also threw for nearly 2,300 yards. He had 26 TDs last season and only five picks. Dobbs still has room to grow as a true passer, but there's no doubt he's No. 2 on this list.
1. Chad Kelly, Ole Miss
There's simply no way Kelly isn't at the top. He nearly went pro, but his return helps Ole Miss in a big way. Kelly racked up an impressive 4,542 yards of offense and 41 TDs. A dual threat, he'll be counted on once again to carry the Ole Miss offensive attack. He should be an easy All-SEC first team selection and could even push for All-American status, despite there being plenty of quality QBs across college football. Expect another big year from Kelly.
