The interim Sounders coach and longtime defensive stalwart go all the way back to 2002, when the club was still playing in the minor-league USL.

Interim Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer and longtime defensive stalwart Zach Scott go all the way back to 2002, to the former’s first professional head coaching gig and the latter’s rookie year.

So with Scott retiring at the end of this season after 15 years with the club, Schmetzer had no shortage of anecdotes upon which to describe the secret behind the veteran’s staying power and his Sounders legacy.

“His training habits, his sacrifice for the team – those are the things that stuck out in my mind,” Schmetzer said Thursday.
