The Sounders will sign 15-year-old midfielder Danny Leyva to a first-team contract, sources confirmed to The Seattle Times. The Athletic first reported the news of the team signing Leyva, who is set to be the youngest player to sign in Sounders history.
Leyva impressed during two preseason matches with the Sounders in February and during training with the team during the FIFA international break in March. He was signed to a USL contract with the Sounders’ Tacoma Defiance last October. He is currently training with the United States U-17 men’s national team in Florida.
“Throughout the preseason he has shown that he can keep up,” Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer told reporters after practice on Friday, noting a possible signing would be good for the club.
