Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei up for MLS Save of the Year

Major League Soccer announced on Friday that it has nominated Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei for the 2016 AT&T Save of the Year.

Frei’s nod comes for his effort against New York City FC in Week 16, in which the veteran goalkeeper parried away a deflection from close range and tipped the ball wide. His reaction save kept the deficit at 1-0.

Frei has been no stranger to highlight-reel stops this season. He’s come up huge on multiple occasions and saved — literally — points for the Sounders during their playoff hunt. His diving stop against the Houston Dynamo’s Will Bruin may have even been his best effort, and Frei’s save against the LA Galaxy’s Giovani dos Santos was perhaps the biggest moment of Seattle’s season.
