The Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas had battled to a 1-1 draw and were two minutes into the second extra time period when Senegalese forward Macoumba Kandji dribbled past a defender in the box and got off a shot as he was hard-tackled by Ugo Ihemelu. FC Dallas defender George John, a Shoreline native and former Washington Huskies star, was standing between his goalkeeper and the shooter when the ball struck his thigh and headed into the back of the net.
