The Seattle Sounders stood on the precipice of history, poised to become one of only a handful of teams to win back-to-back MLS Cups. A win would have given them three MLS Cup titles, third most in MLS history behind D.C. United with four and LA Galaxy with five titles.
Instead, the Sounders crumbled in the face of a rampaging Columbus Crew. The Crew took a 3-0 victory in front of an unsettlingly large crowd of 1,500 at MAPFRE Stadium.
Brian Schmetzer’s side were trailing 2-0 before halftime, leading to a double-sub to start the second half as he tried to work his team back into the game.
