The 2020 FIFA Best Awards were unveiled today in a virtual ceremony, with OL Reign’s Megan Rapinoe unexpectedly named to the FIFAPro Women’s World 11. The awards, voted on by players from around the globe, have been handed out annually since 2015.
Rapinoe, for her part, seemed to recognize the absurdity of being named to the World 11 in a year where she only played 367 minutes of competitive soccer in eight games, with her last appearance coming during the SheBelieves Cup back in March. She noted in a that she was surprised to even be eligible, and went on to call for further investment in women’s soccer and to have more matches broadcast, in order to help highlight all of the other phenomenal and deserving players who don’t have the same platform and name recognition as her.
