In new book, original Sounder Adrian Webster chronicles the franchise’s early years

Adrian Webster, who helped the Sounders get to the 1977 Soccer Bowl final, has written a book about his time with the franchise.

Long before Stefan Frei and Roman Torres became synonymous with Sounders championship games, the player known as “The Shadow” captained the team’s earliest incarnation in its first title match.

Adrian Webster was an original Sounder from 1974, a flowing-haired midfielder and fullback who helped propel the North American Soccer League squad into the 1977 Soccer Bowl final at Portland against the venerable New York Cosmos. Though the Sounders controlled large parts of play in that final, a fluke goal against them and late letdown sealed a disappointing 2-1 loss to a New York side boasting World Cup winners Pele, Carlos Alberto and Franz Beckenbauer, as well as Italian striker Giorgio Chinaglia.
