To say that tensions are high around the United States after two straight disappointing results heading into tonight’s match at Honduras would probably be a significant understatement. The USA men’s national team began this World Cup qualifying window believing that nine points were achievable. Instead, they’ll be absolutely thrilled to get out with five and probably satisfied with three.
But a loss to Honduras tonight will leave them on just two points, no better than fifth and potentially as low as sixth. With 11 games still to play in this qualifying cycle there’s plenty of time to fix any problems, but the stress level will be much higher than anyone wants.
