It’s been an interesting couple weeks for Fredy Montero. The Sporting CP forward was among a group of players who were threatened with suspension after they were eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the Europa League. He was also among the players who publicly pushed back against the plan, which the club president eventually backed off of.
To some degree rewarding the president for changing his mind, Montero scored the winning spot kick in the penalty shoot out of the Taca de Portugal semifinals. Montero had entered the match in the 76th minute.
The win over Porto means Montero will have a chance to win a second Taca de Portugal, having scored the winning goal in the 2015 final with Sporting CP.
