With the regular season over, the Seattle Seahawks have turned their attention to the offseason. The team's first priority is re-signing its own players, and the Seahawks have several critical contributors they need to bring back next season. The team also a few that could end up being cap casualties, especially since money is tight.
The Seahawks have just over $26 million in cap space at the moment, so the team doesn't really need to clear cap space as much as other teams. However, Seattle has free agents the team wants to bring back and a few players whose contracts don't match their level of play. Those players are prime candidates to be released. RB Marshawn Lynch could have been one such player, but his retirement eliminated that possibility. With that in mind, here are three players the Seahawks could cut this offseason.
TE Jimmy Graham
Graham is the only big-name player on this list, but he's a controversial selection. Seattle gave up a lot to acquire Graham last year, but he's coming off a nasty torn patellar tendon in his right knee. That's the type of injury that can ruin a career and Graham carries a non-guaranteed $9 million salary next season. The team can save all of that by cutting him, and there's a chance they do just that. However, the best case for both sides might be a restructure. DE Ryan Robinson
Outside of Graham, there really aren't any big names on the Seahawks' roster that could be cut. That leaves us with players like Robinson, who didn't play last season after injuring his Achilles. Robinson has a $600,000 base salary next year, none of which is guaranteed. Robinson was originally signed by the Raiders when he was an undrafted free agent. However, he's more likely to be a preseason cut than an offseason cut.
LB Kevin Pierre-Louis
The Seahawks had hopes for Pierre-Louis, but he hasn't lived up to them so far. The former fourth round pick has battled injuries and wasn't effective when he played this season. Cutting Pierre-Louis would save the team over $500,000 next season. Much like Robinson, Pierre-Louis is more likely to be a preseason release than an offseason cap cut.
