When we last talked about Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, one area of his playcalling tendencies that stood out was his extremely low usage of play-action passing. We now have five weeks of data and Grubb continues to rely heavily on straight dropback passing out of the shotgun formation.
Geno Smith not only has the lowest play-action rate of any quarterback (per NFL Pro), he’s three percentage points lower than the next quarterback (Kirk Cousins). But the issue is not just the lack of play-action, it’s also how generally ineffective they’ve been when in use.
