Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday that free safety Earl Thomas is out for the season with a broken tibia.

Thomas suffered the injury with 10:40 to play in the second quarter when he collided legs with teammate Kam Chancellor as each was attempting to defend a pass from Carolina’s Cam Newton to tight end Greg Olsen.

Carroll said he did not know if Thomas would need surgery and did not speculate on the length of recovery.
