How Marcus Smith went from first-round bust to one of the Seahawks’ most important players

For as long as he takes on a larger role in the Seahawks’ defense, Marcus Smith says he has one clearly-defined goal.

“I definitely don’t want to let Cliff (Avril) down or Mike (Bennett) down,’’ said Smith, who will become a regular part of the team’s defensive end rotation for as long as Avril is sidelined with a neck/spine issue that has his football future uncertain.

It’s a role Smith gave an early indication he may be able to fill well when he had 1.5 sacks in Sunday’s 46-18 win over the Colts, including forcing a fumble that Bobby Wagner returned for a touchdown in the third quarter that helped break the game open.
