Former Super Bowl receiver Chris Matthews clears waivers after the Seahawks released him
Former Seattle Seahawks receiver Chris Matthews went unclaimed after the Seahawks released him on Tuesday. That means Matthews is a free agent and able to sign with any team.
Matthews was the breakout star of the Super Bowl last year, when he caught four passes for 109 yards and a touchdown — his only catches of the season. Matthews used his size — he is 6-5 — to shield defensive backs or to get the ball in the air. He provided the Seahawks with an ability they hadn’t previously had, but his role took on less importance after the team traded for tight end Jimmy Graham, who has many of the same skills and physical attributes.
