Former 49ers, Chiefs, and Washington Football Team QB Alex Smith announced his retirement from football via his Instagram account.
Born in Bremerton, Washington, a suburb of Seattle on the Puget Sound, Smith went on to spend most of his childhood in California before being the first player selected in the 2005 NFL Draft out of the University of Utah. He would spend his first eight seasons in San Francisco, but it wasn’t until 2011 that he would reach the playoffs and ultimately make the NFC Championship Game. He was traded to Kansas City in the 2013 offseason after losing his starting job to Colin Kaepernick.
