NFL free agency is just a few days old, and the Seattle Seahawks have been relatively quiet to this point. However, they are ramping up their efforts to fill some needs. Here are the latest Seahawks news & rumors you need to know:
Latest on Seattle's pursuit of Adrian Peterson
Vikings running back Adrian Peterson visited the Seahawks on Sunday, and he is still in Seattle at the facility. Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times detailed the visit and what the timeline may be on his decision:
For Peterson, it’s the beginning of what is the first free agent tour of a career that dates to 2007 and he is expected to also explore interest from teams such as the Raiders and possibly the Vikings — as well as whatever else may develop — before making any decision.
Seattle, likewise, is almost certainly putting Peterson through a physical to get a sense of his health, especially a knee on which he had surgery last September to fix a meniscus injury (he also had an ACL injury in 2011). Due to the knee injury, Peterson played in just three games last season.
Seattle is also expected to host Oakland’s Latavius Murray on Tuesday and Kansas City’s Jamaal Charles in the next few days, as well, and also has interest in Green Bay’s Eddie Lacy, who also visited over the weekend.
It’s thought Seattle intends to conduct its visits with all four running backs and likely see where the running back market goes before making any offers. The free agent running back market has been especially slow to develop with the just two agreeing to deals since the beginning of the free agent signing period on Thursday — Charger Danny Woodhead with the Ravens and Jacquizz Rodgers re-signing with Tampa Bay.
Peterson has expressed interest in signing with the Seahawks, putting them with the Raiders as one of his two preferred destinations. A knee injury limited Peterson to just three games in 2016, in which he rushed for just 72 yards on 37 carries. In 2015, he led the league with 1,485 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.
Details of Luke Joeckel's contract
After losing former Packers guard T.J. Lang to the Lions, the Seahawks went out and signed former Jaguars offensive lineman Luke Joeckel to a one-year contract worth $8 million, with $7 million guaranteed. Seattle has made it a priority to upgrade their offensive line this offseason, and Joeckel projects to start at left tackle.
Obi Melifonwu to visit Seahawks
Moving onto the draft, fast rising UConn safety Obi Melifonwu is set to make a pre-draft visit to Seattle, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
Imposing Connecticut safety Obi Melifonwu is scheduled to visit the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly.
Following an excellent performance at the Senior Bowl, Melifonwu's performance at the combine (4.40 40-yard dash, 44 inch vertical, 11'9" broad jump) has some draft experts projecting him to be a late first or early second round prospect.
