The Seattle Seahawks won their fifth straight on Sunday, reaching the NFL Playoffs once again by virtue of a 30-13 home win over the Cleveland Browns. Seattle improved to 9-5 on the season while the Browns fell to 3-11. Here's some notes, quotes and observations from the game.
Notes:
We had a 100/100 committee moment in this one for Seattle. QB Russell Wilson hit 100 touchdown passes for his career while HC Pete Carroll won his 100th game.
Browns HC Mike Pettine told reporters earlier in the week that Russell Wilson isn't in the top tier of NFL quarterbacks. He's eating his words now after Wilson dominated, throwing three touchdown passes and running circles around the Cleveland defense.
RB Christine Michael had 16 of the team's 36 carries on the day for 84 yards. Bryce Brown had the second most with 9 for 43 yards. Without Marshawn Lynch and Thomas Rawls, Seattle's running game did an admirable job.
Browns QB Johnny Manziel was largely ineffective, throwing for just 161 yards and rushing for 17. He tossed a touchdown but also threw a pick, showing very little of the explosiveness Cleveland needs out of him.
Quotes:
"We're not using that word." -- Seahawks HC Pete Carroll on whether or not the team is utilizing a running back committee
"We had a private, laughing moment" -- Cleveland HC Mike Pettine about his postgame meet-up with Pete Carroll
"He has somewhat of a calf strain." -- Pete Carroll on LT Russell Okung
Observations:
The Seattle Seahawks have turned the jets on at the right time, rounding out into playoff form after starting the season at 4-5. This team is missing its top two running backs, has suffered through inconsistent defense, but remains the one NFC team that no one wants to see come the postseason. Russell Wilson and Seattle will likely have to go on the road to open the playoffs, and things could be troublesome with the 12th Man likely out of the equation for a playoff run. But, we still will never count out this team.
The 2016 NFL Draft is going to be a really interesting one for Browns fans. It looks more and more likely by the week that the team will punt on their current quarterback situation and draft somebody like Cal's Jared Goff in the first round. Why not? Until this team finds stability both on and off the field at quarterback, they're going to be stuck like glue to the bottom of the NFL ladder.
