The Seattle Seahawks are likely to lose wide receiver Jermaine Kearse this offseason. Kearse said he expects to leave Seattle, and is looking forward to leaving. While the team doesn't need him on the roster, his departure does open up a hole at WR. The Seahawks could look to the NFL draft or free agency to help fill Kearse's role.
Doug Baldwin will remain the No. 1 WR on the roster and Tyler Lockett showed promise last season. Paul Richardson is a former second round pick, but he's been hurt and remains unproven. That's really it for the Seahawks wide receivers corps, as it's unfair to expect anything from Ricardo Lockette so soon after his neck injury. He's a free agent anyway. With that lack of depth, the team should try to add someone this season. Here are three WRs the Seahawks could target this offseason.
3. Tajae Sharpe
If you don't know who Sharpe is, that's perfectly okay. He played for a bad Massachusetts team, so it's understandable that he isn't well-known. But Sharpe was great for UMass and has potential. He'll likely be a mid-round draft pick and the team could use him as depth while developing him into a potential starter. Sharpe is 6-foot-4, but needs to add weight to his 201-pound frame.
2. Andre Holmes
It's a terrible year for free agent WRs, which is partially why the team is letting Kearse go. His value is going to be inflated by the poor WR class and he'll be overpaid. Holmes, too, might be overpaid this offseason, but he does fill a need. The team has several undersized WRs, but they lack a big, tall red-zone threat. Holmes isn't the greatest WR and his hands are suspect, but he'd be a cheap addition. For more Seahawks coverage, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app.
1. Michael Thomas
If the Seahawks elect to take a WR early in the draft, their best bet might be Ohio State's Michael Thomas. While there are several WRs that could be selected near this range, Thomas has the size the Seahawks could use. At 6-foot-3, Thomas can be the bigger threat Russell Wilson lacks among his WRs right now. While Thomas is still raw and might need time to acclimate to the NFL game, he has potential. Thomas could see the field early for the Seahawks in a situational role.
