The Seattle Seahawks have had some wonderful luck in the NFL Draft over the years (Cortez Kennedy, Shaun Alexander, etc.) but they’ve also had their fair share of draft busts who’ve broken our hearts with heaping spoonfuls of potential unfulfilled. Here’s our list of The 3 Biggest Draft Busts In Seattle Seahawks History.
3. WR Koren Robinson (#9 in 2001)
In a 2001 draft stocked with wide receiving prospects, the Seahawks decided to expend a top-ten pick on boom/bust wideout Koren Robinson out of South Carolina. Robinson both boomed and busted in the Pacific Northwest, putting together a stellar 2002 campaign (78 catches, 1,240 yards, five touchdowns) before running afoul of both the team and the NFL's substance abuse policy. His arrest for a DUI in 2005 was the last straw, as the Seahawks cut ties with the troubled former top-ten pick. An all-time "what if" if there ever was one.
2. QB Dan McGwire (#16 in 1991)
The Seahawks tabbed McGwire as their franchise quarterback coming out of the 1991 draft, but that didn't exactly pan out. McGwire struggled to acclimated to the NFL game, riding the pine behind Dave Krieg and never truly challenging for a permanent starting role at any time. He continued to sit while the team drafted Rick Mirer as the next, NEXT franchise quarterback, and after a brief stint of mediocrity with Mirer sidelined by injury, McGwire washed out of Seattle after four underwhelming seasons.
1. LB Aaron Curry (#4 in 2009)
A former Butkus Award winner and All-American coming out of Wake Forest, Curry commanded the richest non-quarterback rookie contract in league history ($60 million, $34 million of that guaranteed). Curry never came close to living up to half of that investment, starting 30 games and amassing just 5.5 sacks for Seattle before being shipped off to Oakland. The Seahawks' defense would be fine within time, but this was a major setback both on the field and financially.
