We don't need to re-hash how the 2014 season ended, but let's just say the Seahawks are very close to where they need to be to win another Super Bowl.
It's a bit of a surprise, then, to find out that they actually have a fair amount of cap room before roster cuts. While they can only afford one big-name target who isn't already on the roster, the Seahawks have some room to maneuver in free agency...and they have their eyes on several very interesting targets. Here are the names at the top of their list:
3. Cecil Shorts
The Seahawks are reportedly intrigued by Shorts, a player who we're told former Defensive Coordinator (and current Jags HC) Gus Bradley loves. Shorts hasn't exactly shined since his breakout year in 2012, but his regression has a lot more to do with the guys throwing him the ball (or failing to do so) than any personal shortcomings. A crafty player with speed to burn, Shorts could reignite his career in Seattle while learning what it's like to play for a fully-functional NFL team.
2. Torrey Smith
Shorts and Smith were mentioned together, in a way that leads us to believe they're both at (or near) the top of Seattle's wishlist. We'd give Smith the edge because of more impressive production, but his price tag would likely be quite a bit higher (which might prevent a move for our #1 target)
1. Ndamukong Suh
Suh is the big question mark of this free agency period, but we know Seattle is his preferred destination. It also sounds like that interest is mutual.
Everyone we've talked to thinks the Seahawks are trying to figure out a way to make the numbers work, and that'll be the final factor in determining whether he comes to the Northwest or not. The Seahawks are going to be financially limited by whatever extensions they hand out this Spring, and with Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and more all up for a raise, Seattle just might not be able to compete with the other offers out there. That's all hypothetical at the moment, though, and while they won't pick him over extensions for Russell Wilson or other existing stars, Suh is still the Seahawks' number one free agency target.
