Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman will need Tommy John surgery on his injured left elbow, head coach Pete Carroll confirmed on Monday.
Sherman suffered ligament damage to his left elbow during the NFC Championship Game and didn't miss any practice time or game minutes in the Super Bowl despite making tackles and plays using his left arm.
Tommy John surgery is a procedure in which the ulnar collateral ligament undergoes reconstruction using a tendon from somewhere in the body, and is most commonly performed on baseball pitchers.
Carroll also said that strong safety Kam Chancellor's injured left knee might be worse than originally feared. Chancellor hurt his knee during Friday's practice and was wearing a small brace on his left knee during the Super Bowl.
