The Arizona Cardinals released defensive tackle Darnell Dockett this weekend, leading to speculation that the Seattle Seahawks could swoop in and make a play for him in free agency.
Just a week ago, Dockett tweeted that he’d be playing in Arizona next season one way or another, adding “think about it”. He was clearly hinting that he'd sign with an NFC West rival if he didn't re-sign with the Cardinals, and Seattle's need for a defensive tackle with Dockett's skill set has added fuel to rumors that the Seahawks are the mystery NFC West rival that Dockett was referring to.
As Rob Staton of the Seattle Post Intelligencer adds, "it could be a major assumption on his behalf or just a playful tease. He’ll turn 34 in May and he’s coming off an ACL injury. If the knee clears, he’d still be a terrific addition for this team. The Seahawks need a proven interior pass rusher to add to their rotation. They also need experienced depth up front. Kevin Williams is probably going to move on or retire. They met with Ricky-Jean Francois yesterday before he signed with the Redskins."
If Dockett is healthy and the Seahawks can woo him at the right price tag, don't be surprised if Seattle emerges as the veteran defensive tackle's #1 option in free agency this spring.
