After drawing the earliest possible bye week they could get during the 2014 NFL schedule-making process, the Seahawks know how they spend their off time is extremely important in regards to the rest of the season.
“We want to maximize the bye opportunity,” head coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Monday, via Stephen Cohen of the Seattle Post Intelligencer. “We really want our guys to rest as much as possible. We want them to get as much down time as they can.”
Carroll knows that drawing the first bye of the year isn't ideal, but he's not worrying about what ifs.
“People can say, ‘Well, it’s better if it comes later,’” Carroll said. “Well, we don’t have a choice.”
Teams are required under the current collective bargaining agreement to give their players four straight days off on a bye week. However, Carroll and his staff made the decision to give Seahawks players six days of rest, from Tuesday to this coming Sunday.
Carroll made that decision taking his team's maturity level and self-starting mindset into consideration.
“It depends on the development of your team,” he said. “It depends on the guys that you’re playing with. We’ve been around our football for some time now. The guys know what’s going on. I’m not worried at all about us losing connection with the notebook and all that kind of stuff.
“With a team that you’re just developing, you need to take advantage of all of those chances, so we would come back on Thursday or something and get back at it,” Carroll added. “But most importantly, we’ve found with our team we need to keep them fast, keep them fresh and rested. They work so hard when we work that they’re in good enough shape.”
