The Seattle Seahawks have already made a flurry of moves this offseason, including a good number of cuts involving some key players. We all know that cuts are a major part of the NFL offseason, and as we approach the start of training camp, which notable Seahawks may be the best to be released? Here are the three most likely:
1) P Jon Ryan
The writing is on the wall for Ryan after the Seahawks drafted Texas punter Michael Dickson in the fifth round. Cutting Ryan would save the team $2 million in cap space (though there is $1.2 million in dead money but, coming off a down year with his apparent replacement already on the roster and the team desperate for more cap space, Ryan could be gone.
2) RB Mike Davis
Davis performed well in limited playing time for Seattle last season, and with the team desperate for a consistent rushing attack, you'd think this job would be safe. However, he's on the books for $1.35 million - the most of any running back on the roster outside of Rashaan Penny - with only $350K in dead cap. If Penny wins the starting job in training camp, Davis will be relegated to a backup role and would be fighting with both C.J. Prosise and J.D. McKissic for playing time. And, since both of those players are considerably cheaper than Davis, Seattle could just choose to keep the savings.
3) DL Malik McDowell
This one is unfortunate, but because of an ATV accident that left McDowell with serious brain and eye injuries he suffered last offseason, it's unlikely that McDowell will ever play in the NFL again. Seattle was rumored to be close to releasing him in late April before holding off, likely because they could get some cap relief with him as a post-June 1 cut. Expect that to be the case.
