Each year, several veterans end up cut by their teams before the start of the regular season. That could be the case this year for Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are in win-now mode, but could elect to release a few notable players who survived the pre-free agency cuts.
There are a few veterans who might end up not being on the Seahawks' roster at the start of the season. The Seahawks could try to trade these players before cutting them, but more often than not, the players are simply cut. This list only focuses on some of the more notable players, which means we're ignoring the undrafted free agents or other players who don't quite move the needle enough. With that in mind, here are three players the Seahawks could cut before the season.
QB Trevone Boykin
The Seahawks don't actually have many notable players who stick out to me as potential cuts. I'lll chalk that up to good roster and draft decisions. Even Boykin is a bit of a reach. He was the Seahawks' backup last year as a UDFA, but found himself in trouble with the law yet again this offseason. If the Seahawks add a veteran backup (and they should get someone like Colin Kaepernick), Seattle could try to put Boykin could be put on the practice squad.
RB Alex Collins
Collins was the team's fourth round pick last year, but is suddenly in a numbers game at RB. He carried the ball 31 times for 125 yards and a TD, but was always behind C.J. Prosise and Thomas Rawls on the depth chart. Now, the Seahawks added Eddie Lacy to serve as the big back. Seattle also added Mike Davis off waivers, drafted Chris Carson in the seventh round and have Troymaine Pope. Collins can still make the roster, but his path is not as easy as it could be.
WR Jermaine Kearse
Kearse regressed in 2016 and now finds himself in danger of a roster spot. Doug Baldwin isn't going anywhere and Seattle would love it if Tyler Lockett or Paul Richardson consistently showed the flashes of game-breaking ability they possess. If that happens, Kearse could be relegated to No. 4 WR duty, which puts his roster spot in doubt with third round pick Amara Darboh on the roster now. Tanner McEvoy brings size and there 2016 and 2017 7th rounders Kenny Lawler and David Moore on the roster. So if Kearse struggles in the preseason, the Seahawks could elect to take the $2.2 million in cap savings (Post June 1st Release) and let Kearse leave.
