The Mariners not only have a new affiliate in the Class A Cal League, but they also own it. On Tuesday, the team announced what had been rumored for a month — they have purchased a majority share of the Modesto Nuts while completing a four-year player development contract with the franchise.
“The Mariners are committed to a strong minor league system,” said Mariners director of player development Andy McKay in a statement. “That commitment, coupled with our desire to remain in the California League and the great opportunity to be affiliated with the Nuts and the city and fans of Modesto, has led us to this partnership.
