Ken Griffey Jr.’s election to the Baseball Hall of Fame is sure to elicit visions of moon shots launched into the Kingdome’s upper deck and leaping catches against the wall.
My wife, three daughters and I certainly remember Griffey’s amazing feats. But we’ll also never forget one Friday evening in September 1996 when we saw a side of Junior few people get to see.
I was the lead sports designer at the time for The Seattle Times, and one of our Mariners beat reporters, Bob Sherwin, approached me with a request. Griffey wanted to play a joke on M’s backup catcher John Marzano, who a couple days earlier was in a scuffle with Yankees outfielder Paul O’Neill.
