OAKLAND -- The Mariners reinstated Robinson Cano on Tuesday following his 80-game suspension and optioned right-handed reliever Casey Lawrence to Triple-A Tacoma, opening the door for Cano's return to the lineup for the middle game of their three-game set against the A's.
Cano has been on Major League Baseball's restricted list since May 15 for a violation of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The 14-year veteran tested positive for Lasix, a diuretic that can be used to mask performance-enhancing drugs.
Right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open a spot on Seattle's 40-man roster, which remains full with Cano's return.
