Seattle Mariners' pitcher Nathan Karns at ease fighting for his job

PEORIA, Ariz. -- New teammates. New setting. No job security.

It's a familiar situation for Mariners right-hander Nathan Karns.

Acquired last November in a five-player trade from the Rays, Karns overcame some self-described first-inning jitters to pitch two scoreless frames Thursday in the Mariners 6-5 win over the Padres at Peoria Stadium.

Utility infielder Luis Sardinas helped Seattle move to 2-0 in Cactus League by notching a pair of two-run doubles after replacing Stefen Romero in the fifth inning. Romero, playing first base, took a line drive from Jon Jay off his knee, but the ball ricocheted straight to shortstop Tyler Smith for a 3-6-3 double play.
