Infielder Dee Gordon is the Seattle Mariners’ nominee for the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award, Major League Baseball announced Thursday.
The Roberto Clemente Award is given to the MLB player “who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field,” according to a press release. It’s one of the most prestigious character-based honors in baseball. One player from each MLB club is nominated for the award each year.
The 29-year-old Gordon has long been known for his philanthropic efforts outside of baseball, pre-dating his time in Seattle.
