Report: Seattle Mariners legend Ichiro Suzuki to coach HS baseball in native Japan

The retired superstar will be serving as a “temporary” coach for a powerhouse high school baseball team in his native Japan, according to a report earlier this week from The Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper.

Ichiro, 47, has been working for the Mariners as a “special assistant to the chairman” since May 2018 and full time since April 2019, a few weeks after he announced his retirement following the club’s second game of the ‘19 season in Tokyo.

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto confirmed this week that he’ll continue serving in the role, where he was working with the Ms outfielders and hitters during 2020 spring training until it was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.
