The Mariners made their first move in anticipation of the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline Wednesday, sending left-hander Mike Montgomery to the Cubs for Triple-A Iowa slugger Dan Vogelbach.
The specifics of the deal were first reported by Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Neither club has made an official announcement.
Montgomery, 27, is 3-4 with a 2.32 ERA in 32 appearances spanning 61 2/3 innings in 2016. He was recently moved to the starting rotation, making two starts and going 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA over 11 1/3 frames.
Vogelbach is a first baseman and designated hitter.
