On this date in 1992, the Mariners named Lou Piniella the 9th full-time manager in club history.
From the outset, Lou could see the potential for his new club. In his introductory news conference at the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, he raved about the talented players on his new roster.
“Ken Griffey Jr., who has all the talent in the world,” Piniella was quoted by USA TODAY. “There’s Edgar Martinez, the league batting champion…[Jay] Buhner is outstanding in right. We’ve got Randy [Johnson], Erik Hanson and [Dave] Fleming in our rotation.
