New Playing Surface Begins to Take Shape

The process of replacing the entire playing surface at Safeco Field has been ongoing for two weeks. The Mariners grounds crew, led by Head Groundskeeper Bob Christofferson, and the crew from A.M. Landshaper in Spokane have been hard at work removing the previous grass in the outfield, the infield and foul territory, as well as excavating several inches sand from the field and infield dirt.

The new root zone, which will provide a healthy environment for the new grass to grow, was introduced yesterday.
