The beach was the place where they had come to work not because it was beautiful but because there was a game in the evening. At first the day had been warm and there was sun but the clouds were there, too. Night would come and be cooler than the day but it was late in June and the sun would stay up longer than in the winter when the boy had moved from Durham to the place far north of San Francisco to play for the Sea Men. The boy had been scared then because he was honest and young and the world was a bigger place than he cared to know.
