Morning report: Nathan Karns makes his Mariners debut against the Padres

Nathan Karns will make his Mariners’ debut today, getting the start against the Padres at Peoria Stadium. The game will not be televised, but there will be a radio broadcast on ESPN 710 and Mariners.com

Karns is vying with James Paxton for the final spot in the starting rotation. For those unfamiliar, he has four pitches – fastball, sinker, curveball and changeup. The curveball, which he holds with a spiked up middle finger, can be very nasty with plenty of break. From Brooks Baseball

Ketel Marte, Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager are back in the starting lineup for a second straight day.
