When artist Lou Cella was sculpting the new statue of Ken Griffey Jr., unveiled today outside the Home Plate Gate at Safeco Field, one of the details that gave him the most trouble was the hands.
“I think at one point I made his fingers really stiff, really straight, and it wasn’t right. I needed to slightly relax them,” says Cella.
Capturing the fluid swing of one of the most natural baseball players of all time presented plenty of challenges for Cella, a skilled artist who also created the Dave Niehaus sculpture at Safeco Field.
