The Mariners made another move towards the future today, signing dominant bullpen arm Ken Giles to a multi-year Major League contract. Giles, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery is unlikely to pitch in 2021. Nerveless, he pencils in as a key piece of what the Mariners project to be a contending team in 2022.
Giles has been one of the top relievers in Major League baseball since making his debut in 2014. Armed with an elite fastball sitting in the 99th percentile of all Major League pitchers, he joins a stable of bullpen arms that comfortably sit above 96 mph: newcomers Rafael Montero, Keynan Middleton, Andrés Muños and Domingo Tapia, along with incumbents Yohan Ramirez and Kendall Graveman.
