Mariners shortstop Ketel Marte diagnosed with mononucleosis, headed to disabled list

TORONTO — Mariners shortstop Ketel Marte is headed to the disabled list after being diagnosed with mononucleosis, manager Scott Servais said Friday before their game against the Blue Jays.

Shawn O’Malley and the recently recalled Luis Sardinas will share duties at shortstop while Marte recovers, with no return date set, Servais said.

“I think O’Malley has done a nice job for us in the three games he’s filled in. Not looking for the spectacular — make the routine plays and battle at the plate and do what you can to help us out offensively,” Servais said. “Big picture, from my own viewpoint, it finally felt like we starting to get the gang all back together again, and unfortunately he’s going to be down for a little bit.
