Mariners salute historic 1921 barnstorming tour of Japan by Suquamish team

On Thursday, August 26, the Seattle Mariners will pay tribute to the Suquamish Indian baseball team that barnstormed around Japan during a historic and eventful tour 100 years ago.

Marilyn Wandrey, daughter of Lawrence “Web” Webster, who was the catcher for the team, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Mariners take on the Kansas City Royals at T-Mobile Park.

Wandrey’s dad and his teammates were the first Native American baseball team to tour Japan, which had been introduced to baseball in the 1870s.

The Suquamish Indians consisted of eight players from the Suquamish Tribe, and four “pick-up” non-tribal players from the Seattle area.
