Mariners reliever Joaquin Benoit is day-to-day with a sore throwing shoulder

Already shorthanded because of injuries, the Mariners' bullpen was dealt another setback Monday when reliever Joaquin Benoit revealed he's dealing with soreness in his throwing shoulder.

Benoit wasn't available to pitch in Sunday's 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Athletics. Reliever Joel Peralta was thrust into Benoit's typical eighth inning role instead, allowing a solo home run to Marcus Semien that tied the game at 1.

"You know that's obviously why we went to Peralta," manager Scott Servais said Monday. "You're all scratching your head why it's Peralta in the eighth. There's usually a reason behind it."

Benoit said plans call for him to play catch Tuesday.
