The Mariners made another roster move following their 5-3 loss to the Reds on Sunday, releasing first baseman Gaby Sanchez.
The move wasn’t unexpected. The Mariners are leaning toward using Jesus Montero, Dae-Ho Lee or even possibly first baseman Stefen Romero as the back-up first baseman/right-handed bat off the bench. Sanchez wasn’t going to make the opening day roster. Lee seems to have the edge in the competition so far with Romero likely to head to Class AAA Tacoma with a minor league option remaining.
Seattle brought Sanchez, a one-time all-star with the Marlins, as a non-roster invite on a minor league contract to see if he might fit that role.
