Franklin Gutierrez didn’t want to leave the team that gave him a chance to save his fading baseball career. And the Mariners didn’t want to lose a productive right-handed hitter off the bench.
On Wednesday, the club announced that they had re-signed the veteran outfielder to a one-year major league contract for 2016.
After sitting out all of the 2014 season on the Mariners’ restricted list while dealing with the effects of Ankylosing Spondylitis (an arthritic condition in the lower body), Gutierrez signed a minor league contract with the Mariners last season and was invited to spring training.
