The new-look Mariners bullpen suffered its first significant setback of 2016 Saturday, as right-hander Ryan Cook was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle.
Cook appeared in just one game this spring, throwing a shutout inning March 2 against the Padres, before being diagnosed.
To replace the reliever on the 40-man roster, catcher Rob Brantly was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, announced general manager Jerry Dipoto.
Cook was among a group of rebound candidates that Dipoto acquired this offseason, signing him Jan. 7, to help bolster last season's disappointing bullpen.
