The Mariners sent center fielder Leonys Martin to the 15-day disabled list Friday with what the club characterized as a strained left hamstring.
Stefen Romero, recalled from AAA Tacoma, replaced him on the 25-man roster. Romero will hit eighth and play left field Friday night against Minnesota at Safeco Field.
The move to place Martin on the disabled list was retroactive to Thursday. He tweaked the hamstring stealing second base in the fourth inning of Wednesday's 13-3 win over Oakland. He tried to remain in the game but was pulled after the inning ended.
"He's such a premier defender that anybody you put out there that we have in our organization that could help, it's a step down," manager Scott Servais said Friday.
