Mariners pick up two players from Cubs through waiver claims

Monday was Labor Day and, no surprise, the Mariners continued to work on their roster.

The Mariners acquired outfielder Jacob Hannemann and right-handed pitcher Seth Frankoff through waiver claims from the Chicago Cubs prior to Monday’s series opener against Houston at Safeco Field.

While Hannemann is expected to join the big-league club prior to Tuesday's game against the Astros, Frankoff is not — at least at this point.

The Mariners cleared space on their 40-man roster for the additions by placing reliever David Phelps on the 60-day disabled list because of an impingement in his elbow and by designating reliever Zac Curtis for assignment.
