Mariners ownership transition underway

SEATTLE -- Howard Lincoln, who has been the Mariners' chairman and CEO since 1999, is expected to announce his retirement on Wednesday, according to the Seattle Times.

The club has not confirmed Lincoln's decision, but a 3 p.m. PT news conference is scheduled at Safeco Field, which will be streamed live on mariners.com.

Lincoln was a key member in the group credited with saving baseball in Seattle in 1992, when, as chairman of Nintendo of America, he helped broker the purchase of the team by majority owner Hiroshi Yamauchi, the chairman of Japanese-based Nintendo.

Lincoln retired from his position as Nintendo of America's chairman in 2000, but he has retained his position as the Mariners' CEO and chairman, and he oversees the board of directors that operates the club.
